Double Vision: Taking Psychic Ability from Dreams into Waking Life

I often have premonitions and see spirits in my dreams. How can I do this while awake?

Sam, I can sense beings around me, but I cannot see them with my physical eyes. I have, on occasion, seen spirits in human form, but I know that I was supposed to see that particular being at that time. We all can see flashes of light, orbs, or black shadows out of the corners of our eyes. When we turn our heads, whatever was there is not anymore. We also get feelings from different places. When we walk into a building, we can feel the energy of that building. Some places make us feel cozy and some repel us. We can feel that VERY same thing from the beings around us. We can get a cold chill, a feeling of doom, a sense of happiness, or any other emotion. It will just hit us out of the blue, and it can last a while or be gone in a flash. So those are a few examples of encounters that we all have on a daily basis.

All this being said, I am not sure you are supposed to be seeing beings with your own physical eyes, or you would be right now. You can, however, build your psychic ability like you build any other gift. A great musician is not born great. The musician must learn to play the instrument and practice for many hours. The practice must be kept up, or the abilities of that musician will get rusty.

You build your gifts the same way. You have to find what calls out to you and then learn to use that for yourself. For example, when I first opened up to my gifts, I had no idea where to start. I went to a bookstore and looked at tarot cards. I would read the box and feel the energy from the deck until I found one that felt right to me. I took them home and I was completely overwhelmed. I had no idea what anything meant, and there was so much to learn. I just took it one step at a time.

Spirit will work with you when you find what works for you. It will feel right and you will grow at a pretty fast rate. What calls out to you? Tarot cards? Runes? I-Ching? There are so many oracles out there that can help you build your abilities. Find the one that works for you.

I want you to keep a dream journal as well. I keep hearing the name Edgar Cayce in my head. He would go to sleep or into a trance, and he would “dream” his visions and predictions of the future. He did not do it while he was awake – ever. Keep your journal and write down your dreams to see how accurate they are.

This reminds me of tall girls who want to be short and short girls who want to be tall. We never want what we have. Try to make peace with your gifts and use them to best of your ability.

Fire Signs have to do some kind of meditation exercise every night before sleep to be able to access that kind of information in their dreams at all. Water Signs let things like that flow through their dreams naturally, on almost a nightly basis. Earth Signs often tell me that they are “too grounded” to experience premonitions while sleeping, and Air Signs often have trouble remembering their dreams at all. Getting premonitions and messages in dreams is common among those of us who, for whatever reason, don’t want to be that “open” to things like that while we’re awake. It’s not impossible, however, to transfer this ability to your waking life.

The best way for any sign to start is to keep a Dream Journal! Begin to write in it on the night of the next Full Moon. Even ordinary dreams should go into it. Keep a notebook and pencil or pen handy by your bed, and write down everything you remember about all your dreams for 90 days. Now you have a resource for insights and clues for when you’re awake. Tools are vital when doing spiritual work, and writing and record-keeping is one of the most important!

After you’ve kept this Dream Journal for three months, put it away. Start a new one, but don’t go back to the first one for at least one Moon. At the end of that time, get another notebook and start by reading your journal like it’s a novel or storybook. Go back over it again.

Make lists of the “signs” and “symbols” that happen over and over as you go through your information. Several things that happen either right before, during, or after you get one of your “messages” should begin to emerge as a pattern to you. Find five of these repeating patterns. List them on a piece of paper and keep it close for reference.

Soon you’ll start to notice that these “signs” are appearing to you while you’re asleep and awake. Begin to tune in during the waking hours to what’s really going on with this! It won’t take but a few weeks before you’re seeing other “waking signs” and finding patterns in those, too! Keep a little memo book to jot those down in as they manifest.

As you develop your Energy (and learn how to access it to actually “see” what’s going on), you’ll realize that you’ve always had this ability, but that your subconscious is probably in that “protective” mode so that you won’t be thrown off by “seeing” while you’re awake. Be careful! Sometimes these things rush in at their own speed. Normal daily stuff like driving can become hazardous!

Take things slowly, and don’t rush yourself!

Grounding

Grounding gives us a strong connection with Mother Earth and makes us feel safe and secure. As Empaths, we are extremely intuitive and we spend much of our time in the world of spirit quite naturally. Some would say that our heads are always in the clouds, and if we are truthful, this is where we feel most comfortable. As we spend so much time in the higher realms, our higher chakras open quite naturally; we do literally have one foot in heaven and the other on Earth. However, we are spiritual beings having a human experience and as such we need to have an energetic connection from the physical body into the centre of the earth.

Staying grounded is something that I used to find extremely difficult as an Empath, and still do to a certain extent; I still have to work at it every day. Whilst writing my book, I had to stop intermittently to do things like housework or exercise to bring myself back to planet Earth. I found myself getting so engrossed in the subject matter that I was too much in my head and was drawing in too much spiritual energy. To clear it, I had to do something physical.

Grounding is imperative because when the aura has a solid connection with Mother Earth, we feel calmer and more confident; our intuition is clearer; and our self-esteem is better. Grounding also brings us into balance and allows the energy to flow freely around our bodies, which in turn strengthens our aura.

Have you ever noticed that you can have days when every light switch you touch blows the light bulb? This is a sure indication that you are ungrounded because the physical body is quite electrical and needs grounding to function properly. I also know when I am not grounded because I start to feel anxious and I experience feelings of dizziness and sickness or I become very light-headed. Cold feet, suffering from repeated colds, heart palpitations, weight gain, forgetfulness or receiving static shocks can also be indicators that we are not grounded properly.

As Empaths, we are constantly absorbing the energy around us, and grounding is a way of removing the excessive energy and toxicity from our spiritual and physical bodies. When we ground, we are releasing stress and unwanted energy into Mother Earth (the ultimate Empath), where it is transmuted. During the grounding process, we release the toxic energy and then we draw back up the healing and cleansing Earth Energy.

There are lots of reasons why we can lose our connection with Earth, but things like shock, exhaustion, fear, guilt, and traumatic life events can cause us to lose our grounding. If you are finding the grounding process very difficult, don’t worry: just continue with the visualisation exercise and repeat it several times a day if necessary.

I bought myself a very heavy Hematite bracelet, as this stone is excellent for grounding and protection, but I found that I could only wear it for short periods of time initially because it made me feel quite strange. I realise now that my body was just getting used to feeling grounded, as this was such an unusual state for me to be in. I wore the bracelet for short periods of time to start with, and built up on this as my body adjusted to its new state. Now I can wear the bracelet all the time as I have gotten used to the grounded state. I am just pointing this out as you may have a similar reaction to the process, but it is nothing to worry about. If you really cannot tolerate the black stones like Onyx and Hematite, try a red stone bracelet like Red Jasper, as the energy is a little softer and may be more suitable for you.

I strongly suggest that Empaths should use several grounding techniques at the same time. I personally use exercise, crystals and visualisations in combination every day to help me stay grounded. Other things that can help include gardening, walks in nature, eating chocolate, yoga, meditation, using Rescue Remedy and drinking lots of water. It is also suggested that eating a large meal containing protein is very grounding. To ground myself instantly, I find it really beneficial to either stamp my feet a few times, do a few star jumps, or walk barefoot around the garden.

How to Know if You’re an Empath

Empaths are highly sensitive, finely tuned instruments when it comes to emotions. They feel everything, sometimes to an extreme, and are less apt to intellectualize feelings. Intuition is the filter through which they experience the world. Empaths are naturally giving, spiritually attuned, and good listeners. If you want heart, empaths have got it. Through thick and thin, they’re there for you as world-class nurturers.

The trademark of empaths is that they know where you’re coming from. Some can do this without taking on people’s feelings. However, for better or worse, others like myself and many of my patients can become angst-sucking sponges. This often overrides the sublime capacity to absorb positive emotions and all that is beautiful.

If empaths are around peace and love, their bodies assimilate these and flourish. Negativity, though, often feels assaultive and exhausting. Thus, they’re particularly easy marks for emotional vampires, whose fear or rage can ravage empaths. As a subconscious defense, they may gain weight as a buffer. When thin, they’re more vulnerable to negativity, which is a missing cause of overeating explored in my book, Positive Energy. Plus, an empath’s sensitivity can be overwhelming in romantic relationships; many stay single since they haven’t learned to negotiate their special cohabitation needs with a partner.

When empaths absorb the impact of stressful emotions, it can trigger panic attacks; depression; food, sex and drug binges; and a plethora of physical symptoms that defy traditional medical diagnosis from fatigue to agorophobia. Since I’m an empath, I want to help all my empathic patients cultivate this capacity and be comfortable with it.

Empathy doesn’t have to make you feel too much all the time. Now that I can center myself and refrain from shouldering civilization’s discontents, empathy continues to make me freer, igniting my compassion, vitality, and sense of the miraculous. To determine whether you’re an emotional empath, take the following quiz.

QUIZ: AM I AN EMPATH?

Ask yourself:

  • Have I been labeled as too emotional or overly sensitive?
  • If a friend is distraught, do I start feeling it too?
  • Are my feelings easily hurt?
  • Am I emotionally drained by crowds and require time alone to revive?
  • Do my nerves get frayed by noise, smells, or excessive talk?
  • Do I prefer taking my own car places so that I can leave when I please?
  • Do I overeat to cope with emotional stress?
  • Am I afraid of becoming engulfed by intimate relationships?

If you answer YES to 1-3 of these questions, you’re at least part empath. Responding YES to more than three indicates that you’ve found your emotional type.

Recognizing that you’re an empath is the first step in taking charge of your emotions instead of constantly drowning in them. Staying on top of empathy will improve your self-care and relationships.

Emotional Action Step: How To Find Balance

Practice these strategies to center yourself.

Allow quiet time to emotionally decompress. Get in the habit of taking calming mini-breaks throughout the day. Breathe in some fresh air. Stretch. Take a short walk around the office. These interludes will reduce the excessive stimulation of going non-stop.

Practice guerilla meditation. To counter emotional overload, act fast and meditate for a few minutes. This centers your energy so you don’t take on the energy of others.

Define and honor your empathic needs. Safeguard your sensitivities. Here’s how:

  • If someone asks too much of you, politely tell them No. It’s not necessary to explain why. As the saying goes, No is a complete sentence.
  • If your comfort level is three hours max for socializing – even if you adore the people – take your own car or have an alternate transportation plan so you’re not stranded.
  • If crowds are overwhelming, eat a high-protein meal beforehand. (This will ground you.) Sit in the far corner of a theater or party, not dead center.
  • If you feel nuked by perfume, nicely request that your friends refrain from wearing it around you. If you can’t avoid it, stand near a window or take frequent breaks to catch a breath of fresh air outdoors.
  • If you overeat to numb negative emotions, practice the guerilla meditation mentioned above before you’re lured to the refrigerator, a potential vortex of temptation. As an emergency measure, keep a cushion by the fridge so you can be poised to meditate instead of binge.
  • Carve out private space at home. Then you won’t be stricken by the feeling of too much togetherness.

Over time, I suggest adding to this list to keep yourself covered. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you’re on emotional overload. With pragmatic strategies to cope, empaths can have quicker retorts, feel safer, and their talents can blossom.
