Double Vision: Why can’t “spiritual people” easily develop psychic ability?

I've been on a spiritual quest for some time - really all my life. I am often reading two spiritual books at a time. I've been to good and not so good psychics since my early twenties. I always look for signs and usually go with my gut. Lately I've had a strong desire to develop some type of psychic awareness. I keep trying to connect with my higher power, but not much is happening. Then I read about people who aren't even interested in psychic or spiritual matters having experiences with spirits, starting to spontaneously channel, hearing messages from Spirit, and it just blows my mind. How come these people naturally have psychic ability, while people like me who are really pursuing it just keep searching?

Dreamchaser:

Joyce, I'm not sure how to break this to you, but you are already doing "it." You wrote, "I always look for signs and usually go with my gut."

EVERYONE is born "psychic" - some choose to believe it and some don't. Most people have a skewed sense of what psychic ability is. Like you, most people think that something has to happen outside of their minds or souls for it to be a real experience. That isn't psychic ability, my friend. That's a haunting.

Every spiritual experience happens inside of us. I don't have spiritual beings descend from "heaven" into my house and tell me what I should say to clients. I don't have this band of spirits behind me whispering the right or wrong way to act in a personal situation in my life. Like you, I ask and then watch for signs. I turn off my logic and I listen to my gut. I allow my inner knowing to point me in the right direction.

When I first started giving readings, I was really afraid that I would not be able to connect with strangers like I could with friends. I was very hesitant and scared at first. Then one day I was reading for the wife of a powerful judge in a Southern town. She kept complaining about her marriage and how it was not working and I kept getting these images of a young, strong, handsome handyman around the place. I "just knew" that she was having an affair with the handyman. My logic was saying, "Do not say that! What if you are wrong? That is just not possible. This woman is the rich, high society wife of a powerful and influential man."

My gut, however just kept nagging at me. Finally I said, "Maybe your marriage would be better if you would accept some of the blame yourself." She said, "But I have no blame to accept." I said, "You are sleeping with your handyman." She was quiet for approximately 30 seconds and then she said, very quietly, "How did you know that?" Being psychic is a matter of trusting your gut no matter how crazy it sounds.

The psychic ability you are searching for is just your idea about what it should be. You think you aren't psychic because your experiences don't match those notions. Yet you have ALWAYS "just known" things. You keep expecting something to happen outside of yourself, but it won't. It is what it is.

Get a notepad and a pen, and then sit down and ask a question. Write down the question you asked and the first thing that pops into your head. Even if you hear "purple pig," write it down. When you start to get a headache, stop. Go back in three days and read what you wrote. You will be amazed.

I wish you conscious integration of all your experiences.

Astrea:

In every field there are people who just "get it" quicker than others. It used to amaze me in ballet when someone would just seem to have a gift or talent for picking up steps while others were struggling to figure things out and make their bodies respond and perform. Sometimes the people who worked the hardest NEVER got what came so easily to someone else.

This is the way of the world. With psychic ability, sometimes it is easier for people who don't even really CARE if they have it or not! Messages are going to come to the people who are most RECEPTIVE, not the ones who read the most and study the longest. When it comes to inter-dimensional communication, sometimes it's easier for guides and spirits to work with an "empty" mind.

Many times when we dig deeper into someone's story of "spontaneous" phenomena or super-cool abilities, we find that there WAS a long background and history of psychic work and/or spiritual training. Sometimes what you read or hear are "just stories" augmented and exaggerated to make them sound more interesting. Don't be frustrated.

Finally, if it doesn't run in your family and hasn't been supported by the people around you, it's no wonder it's a bit hard for you to allow your natural abilities to really flow. You and I come from the same generation, and no doubt you also heard fundamentalists caution us that developing psychic "powers" was a quick ticket to Hell. During the sixties and early seventies, when New Age religions began to grow in popularity, it looked for a while like people would start to embrace interactions with Spirit as natural and good as opposed to demonic. Alas, we have regressed again, and now there isn't much respect or tolerance for ANY religion here in the United States aside from the conservative Christian doctrine.

In fact, accessing psychic ability takes tremendous concentration and total focus. If you're focusing on the things others can do and feeling discouraged, you're probably hindering your own progress and preventing yourself from being guided to your own best path to development. Frustration is one of the biggest blocks to creating breakthroughs and tapping fresh ideas and insights.

Fire signs have enough trouble concentrating on mental endeavors. Heck, just SITTING STILL is hard for you. Seek QUIET and CLARITY, and it will come to you. Quit ASKING for answers, and they'll start to manifest in quiet moments. De-clutter your living space AND your mind to make room for new insights and abilities. If you stop striving and just listen quietly, you'll be able to do what you want soon!

Astrea:

Many times in life we hear, "You will always have what you NEED, but not necessarily what you WANT." Your spirit must have needed to experience the feeling of leaving your human body, and the suggestion in the next chapter of Sylvia Brown's book was all it took to get you there.

Even though you hadn't read it yet, your SOUL recognized the title of that chapter as something it had been seeking, and your soul, knowing that you had that reference to read after your experience, got with it and out you went!

While I don't usually recommend her books, Sylvia Brown has a wide reaching and powerful effect on lots of people. A Gemini like you would be able to relate easily to her writing and put it to good use. Synchronicity - you gotta love it!

I like your description of "getting caught." That's exactly what it feels like, isn't it? One minute you're free and hovering above the room, and the next minute, ZAP! back down into your corporeal form you go!

As a little kid, I loved that "feeling of return." With practice, most of the time we can control that event, but sometimes, when our physical ears hear a distracting noise or something else occurs to knock us back into reality, back we go. With practice you will be able to control your return better.

I find it interesting that you were visiting your mother-in-law and not someone in your own genetic family. Evidently, you and your husband got married for reasons that are even deeper than love. His family's interest in "psychic stuff" will nurture your children in such matters and help them to grow into their own abilities.

You'll never have to be concerned that when your daughter visits them, she'll be discouraged from exploring her own psychic life and power. My parents encouraged me to develop my psychic senses in a time when it wasn't nice to even discuss such things in public. Heck, it's STILL not considered a great topic at the dinner table in some families!

Your kids will get to talk about it ALL and ask questions and read and study. This is going to give them such an edge in life! Talk with your husband about how you want to present this to your kiddos, so that you are united in your approach and ready to tell them their experiences are all natural and okay.

A word or two of warning: Geminis often have difficulty staying grounded in REAL LIFE. Don't get so strung out on your ASTRAL life that you neglect what you're doing here on Earth.

You are at the beginning of a long journey to learn where your power really lies. Try to be patient with this process and take your time.
