Earlier this week I woke up sometime during the night, and while in a very relaxed and peaceful state, I looked up at the ceiling and saw dozens of tiny red lights zooming around in a circular pattern about four feet above me. Nothing about this made me feel uncomfortable at all, so I went back to sleep. When I woke up some time later, I saw the same thing! When I told my husband about the lights, I called them fairies, but I know enough to know that I don't know what this was. Can you tell me anything about this phenomenon? Love to you!

Astrea:
Celtic folklore has long been filled with the phenomena known as fairy lights. In this country, we usually call them orbs,
which can be any unexplained sighting of small, glittering lights. The red lights you saw were indeed fairies. It's the right time of year for them to move in.
It is said that fairies come in all colors, red being one of the most common. Fairies who come indoors, as yours did, are usually looking for mischief and trouble, so it's a good idea to start feeding yours. If it's at all possible, do this out of doors.
As sweet and delightful as it might seem to have a bunch of red fairies in your home, they will wreak havoc on your household. Taking them to the yard and leaving them there is a lot better than having them inside to hide your keys, break your coffee cups, and exchange your sugar for salt!
Build something for them. I have a ring in my yard that appeared naturally in some decorative grass about twenty years ago. After an exhaustive search, I found nine rocks that were all different to place around the ring.
Using an old Egyptian principle, I tried to find rocks which were different colors. A very light color should be placed at the south, while a darker rock anchors the north. The others should all be in between those two extremes.
Place your four corners first, and then build your circle around those four. Brightly colored pebbles, marbles, pieces of glass (not too sharp!) and other weatherproof items can round out your circle. Leave a little entrance at the south rock so they can come and go as they please.
To feed them, the day before the moon is full, bake or buy them a plain white cake. (They prefer homemade from scratch, but over the years they've become used to the box variety.) Frost it with butter cream icing and cut it into tiny pieces on a plain white plate.
Place small paper cups of milk around the cake. Do this at every Full Moon during the summer. This will ensure you aren't victimized by any pranks. Regularly feed them with cake, white bread, and milk. As a bonus, you'll see your yard thrive like it never has before.
The fairies will set up housekeeping in your yard, and with any luck, you'll be able to see them again throughout the whole of the summer. When fall comes, cleanse your rocks in saltwater overnight and replace them. The fairies will come as long as the weather is nice, and when winter arrives, they'll move to a warmer climate, and return to you again in the spring.

Susyn:
People have been wondering the same question you ask for ages. There are many different theories concerning these lights. Some think they are fairies, others refer to them as sprites or angels, and still others consider them to be representative of evil spirits. Many cite scientific theories in their explanations.
Though you didn't feel uneasy, it must have been unsettling to awaken to these lights with no idea what they were or where they came from. I wouldn't worry over it too much at this point unless it continues. You might never be able to determine the cause, but you will want to ensure that your home is not being haunted or possessed by unfriendly entities.
Most people who experience this phenomenon recall the lights they've seen swirling about as being white. There are people who study this sort of thing, and they claim if the lights are red, they represent angels or spirits. Others believe that these lights are caused by nature, and cite lightning, weather conditions or electro-magnetic fields as their source.
It's hard to determine which of these theories applies to the lights you saw, but the fact that they were still around when you awakened some time later negates the idea that they might have been created by nature, a car passing by or a reflection.
If this turns out to be a one-time occurrence, I wouldn't worry about it too much. However, if it continues, you'll be able to determine the nature of these lights by the way you feel when you see them. If they don't bother you, as you stated in your letter, they are most likely angels or sprites playing and watching over you.
On the other hand, if they make you feel uneasy, it's best to try a smudging or blessing of your house to stop the activity. If these lights are benign and not of a negative nature, this should take care of the problem.
If you've been experiencing other strange phenomena in your home, these lights could be representative of spirits or ghosts lurking about. If this is the case, you'll want to do more research, and if you find your house to be occupied by unwanted entities, call on a Spiritualist or paranormal team to have them removed.
Hopefully this will be the last you see of these lights, for though many people consider them to be harmless, it's possible that they could cause some trouble. If they are fairies, angels or friendly sprites, they can still surround you and bring joy to your life without waking you in the night.

Many times in life we hear, "You will always have what you NEED, but not necessarily what you WANT." Your spirit must have needed to experience the feeling of leaving your human body, and the suggestion in the next chapter of Sylvia Brown's book was all it took to get you there.
Even though you hadn't read it yet, your SOUL recognized the title of that chapter as something it had been seeking, and your soul, knowing that you had that reference to read after your experience, got with it and out you went!
While I don't usually recommend her books, Sylvia Brown has a wide reaching and powerful effect on lots of people. A Gemini like you would be able to relate easily to her writing and put it to good use. Synchronicity - you gotta love it!
I like your description of "getting caught." That's exactly what it feels like, isn't it? One minute you're free and hovering above the room, and the next minute, ZAP! back down into your corporeal form you go!
As a little kid, I loved that "feeling of return." With practice, most of the time we can control that event, but sometimes, when our physical ears hear a distracting noise or something else occurs to knock us back into reality, back we go. With practice you will be able to control your return better.
I find it interesting that you were visiting your mother-in-law and not someone in your own genetic family. Evidently, you and your husband got married for reasons that are even deeper than love. His family's interest in "psychic stuff" will nurture your children in such matters and help them to grow into their own abilities.
You'll never have to be concerned that when your daughter visits them, she'll be discouraged from exploring her own psychic life and power. My parents encouraged me to develop my psychic senses in a time when it wasn't nice to even discuss such things in public. Heck, it's STILL not considered a great topic at the dinner table in some families!
Your kids will get to talk about it ALL and ask questions and read and study. This is going to give them such an edge in life! Talk with your husband about how you want to present this to your kiddos, so that you are united in your approach and ready to tell them their experiences are all natural and okay.
A word or two of warning: Geminis often have difficulty staying grounded in REAL LIFE. Don't get so strung out on your ASTRAL life that you neglect what you're doing here on Earth.
You are at the beginning of a long journey to learn where your power really lies. Try to be patient with this process and take your time.
