Thank you so much for the opportunity to ask a question. What I want to know is if the spirits of people we have been very close to can save our lives when we're in dire situations. I believe this happened to me about a year ago, and since then, I feel this loving presence all the time. Is this something that spirits can do if their love for us is very strong?

Over the course of my career as a psychic, I've heard hundreds of stories like yours, where a loved one, Guide or Angel stepped in to save someone's life. So while I believe in the truth of free will, I also believe in protection from outside sources.
When we have been very close to someone, it's only natural that our relationship would continue no matter which side of the Veil our loved one inhabits. So strong are some of these bonds that we are sometimes able to clearly communicate with loved ones who aren't on the Earth plane with us any longer.
If you're having trouble hearing this person you were close to, try thinking of some of the common things that person used to do. When Daddy died, at first it was difficult to hear him talk and advise me. For years, I had counseled grieving people that it takes about a year for a Soul to reach out to us from Beyond, as they have their own lives to deal with after the deaths of their bodies. I couldn't wait a year for him. When he was living, I was in constant need of him; now that he isn't, that hasn't changed.
My uncle helped me a great deal, as he had just lost my aunt. He recommended books to read, and in Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, I found the way back to his voice. She was checking her voice mail messages one day and realized that her husband's voice was still on the machine. I closed my eyes and recalled the sound of Daddy's voice on his, and that's what opened me up to be able to hear him again.
Daddy and I enjoyed a fairy tale relationship. He was always there for me, and even though he's left me physically, I still speak to him every time I open the door to his house, and say good night to him before I go home every day. I miss him deeply but I don't think that I am imagining things when I hear
him speak to me. The person you were so close to is still there for you, too.
For those who doubt our loved ones are with us after their bodies die, ask yourself a few questions. Are we really behind all our life decisions? Are we so arrogant as to believe that others don't step in when we're lost, discouraged or depressed? Of course not!
We all need to believe in something beyond ourselves. When we are in situations or events happen where we feel out of control, we need to believe that higher forces can step in and take over for us. Fortunately, our loved ones are always near, and they step in to help us when they can.

The spirits of our loved ones can definitely protect us, direct us and save our lives. Even when we can't hear them or feel their presence, they are always around us, and they will intervene on our behalf whenever possible.
As a case in point, I lost my husband in a fatal car accident many years ago. Three weeks after he passed, my sister-in-law had a near miss with a car at a four-way stop sign. She said that a voice told her not to go even though it was her turn, and within two seconds, another car came squealing through the intersection.
A few years later, my brother was traveling on an interstate highway. He pulled over to a rest stop on an intuitive whim, and seconds later, a huge semi-truck careened off the highway, landing upside down in the exact place my brother would have been, had he not gotten off the road.
Yet another time, my nephew was driving home when a propane truck ran a red light and hit him broadside. Though the car he was in was totalled, he walked away from it unharmed. Each time a member of my family is saved from a tragic car accident, we always attribute it to our highway guardian angel
- my husband.
There are many well-documented cases of this type, where through the gift of spiritual intervention, people are kept from physical, emotional or spiritual harm. That voice some people assume to be their intuition or higher self often comes directly from loved ones in Spirit, who are always looking after us.
The fact that you have felt a loving presence around since this incident occurred indicates that when this life-threatening event happened, it opened you up to a new level of awareness. You can be sure that your loved ones have been near you since the day they crossed over. Because it's common for a person to go through a major transformation after a near-death experience, you now possess the ability to feel and sense your loved one's presence around you more easily.
As you continue to note and honor your loved one's presence in your life, the sense that they are always near you will increase. Take time to talk with them and acknowledge and thank them for their help. You'll want to pray for their happiness, advancement and protection as well.
We all have spirit guides and guardian angels who look over us. What a wonderful thing to realize that our loved ones in Spirit maintain a vested interest in our health and well-being, and will step in to help us when they can.

Many times in life we hear, "You will always have what you NEED, but not necessarily what you WANT." Your spirit must have needed to experience the feeling of leaving your human body, and the suggestion in the next chapter of Sylvia Brown's book was all it took to get you there.
Even though you hadn't read it yet, your SOUL recognized the title of that chapter as something it had been seeking, and your soul, knowing that you had that reference to read after your experience, got with it and out you went!
While I don't usually recommend her books, Sylvia Brown has a wide reaching and powerful effect on lots of people. A Gemini like you would be able to relate easily to her writing and put it to good use. Synchronicity - you gotta love it!
I like your description of "getting caught." That's exactly what it feels like, isn't it? One minute you're free and hovering above the room, and the next minute, ZAP! back down into your corporeal form you go!
As a little kid, I loved that "feeling of return." With practice, most of the time we can control that event, but sometimes, when our physical ears hear a distracting noise or something else occurs to knock us back into reality, back we go. With practice you will be able to control your return better.
I find it interesting that you were visiting your mother-in-law and not someone in your own genetic family. Evidently, you and your husband got married for reasons that are even deeper than love. His family's interest in "psychic stuff" will nurture your children in such matters and help them to grow into their own abilities.
You'll never have to be concerned that when your daughter visits them, she'll be discouraged from exploring her own psychic life and power. My parents encouraged me to develop my psychic senses in a time when it wasn't nice to even discuss such things in public. Heck, it's STILL not considered a great topic at the dinner table in some families!
Your kids will get to talk about it ALL and ask questions and read and study. This is going to give them such an edge in life! Talk with your husband about how you want to present this to your kiddos, so that you are united in your approach and ready to tell them their experiences are all natural and okay.
A word or two of warning: Geminis often have difficulty staying grounded in REAL LIFE. Don't get so strung out on your ASTRAL life that you neglect what you're doing here on Earth.
You are at the beginning of a long journey to learn where your power really lies. Try to be patient with this process and take your time.
