"The greatest mistake is trying to be more agreeable than you can be."
- Walter Bagehot
A curious thing happens when we try too hard to be patient: we tend to blow up or fall apart over unimportant things. Most parents have experienced this dynamic in their children: they'll be calm, reasonable and patient while the child is setting fire to the cat or kicking Grandpa in the shin, but then explode later when the same child asks for another cookie. There is nothing wrong with reacting strongly to serious events; in fact, it tends to keep things in order.
