Daily Inspirational Message for September 15, 2013

contemplation

I believe in God, but not as one thing, not as an old man in the sky. I believe that what people call God is something in all of us. I believe that what Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha and all the rest said was right. It’s just that the translations have gone wrong.

Every day, I see people completely rejecting spirituality because they are turned off by endless religious conflicts and the blind ignorance of fundamentalism. We have only to study the basic beliefs found at the heart of all spiritual paths to see that there must be some universal truths underlying all of those ideologies, and we have only to listen to the wisdom of our own hearts to know that life is more than a biological accident. It takes an open mind and a sophisticated level of thinking to remain comfortable with open-ended questions and gray definitions, to admit that there are some truths that can’t be known for sure. To me, that’s the path of wisdom: to actively explore mysteries for ourselves, but to keep our views and opinions so soft and fluid that new personal experiences can make clear impressions on them.
