Ironically, the more I think about the inevitability of death, the braver I become about taking all sorts of risks. I have a surprising number of friends I went to high school with who are no longer among the living, and when I think about the possibility that any one of us could be gone tomorrow, it suddenly doesn’t seem so risky for any of us to do whatever we feel drawn to do, whether that is asking that certain someone out, starting a business, moving across the world or scrapping everything and starting all over. Every time I start quaking in my boots, wondering what I think I’m doing in reaching for huge dreams, I think about my best friend from high school who died a few years ago, and then I think, ‘What the hell? What have I really got to lose?’
