Apologizing doesn’t mean you’re wrong and the other person is right. It means you value yourself and/or the relationship more than your ego.

If there is someone you are carrying a lot of pain or anger toward, I have a radical suggestion for you: imagine apologizing to them. If your first reaction is, ‘What the hell? They were the one who harmed me!’ then you can be sure that your ego is keeping you locked in an ultimately pointless struggle, and the only way to set yourself free from it is to shift out of ego and into love. When we rise above ego, it becomes instantly clear that it doesn’t matter who did what, for we are all constantly thrashing about like drowning swimmers, trying to get our own needs met. At any moment, however, we can stop flailing, calmly put our feet down, walk out of the water and relax in the sun. When feeling wronged has us stuck in a loop of negative emotion, we have a choice: we can keep endlessly fighting to prove that we’re right, or we can laugh, remember that love and peace are always just a few steps away, and head for the comfort and ease of that sunny shore.
