When grief sits with you, its tropical heat thickening the air, heavy as water more fit for gills than lungs; when grief weights you like your own flesh only more of it, an obesity of grief, you think, ‘How can a body withstand this?’ Then you hold life like a face between your palms, a plain face, no charming smile, no violet eyes, and you say, ‘Yes, I will take you, I will love you again.’ – Ellen Bass

The other night I was talking with some friends, and something startling came up: it turns out that we all get so stressed out sometimes that dying sounds kind of appealing. One after another, these smart, successful, beautiful women admitted that sometimes, they think that if something were to happen to suddenly cut their lives short, at least they wouldn’t have to worry any more, or deal with all of the stress that they have to deal with on a daily basis. Life is not supposed to be so exhausting, stressful, painful or overwhelming that death sounds like sweet relief. If you catch yourself fantasizing about throwing yourself from the roof of a tall building, STOP. Pull yourself back from that sharp emotional edge. Know that you’re not alone, and try to remember all the love, laughter and happiness you’ve enjoyed in the past. If you just hang in there, the sun is sure to shine for you again.
