backrub

When you are in the final days of your life, what will you want? Will you hug that college degree in the walnut frame? Will you ask to be carried to the garage so you can sit in your car? Will you find comfort in rereading your financial statement? Of course not. What will matter then will be people. If relationships will matter most then, shouldn’t they matter most now?

The other day, I had a great conversation with a friend about the power of loving touch, after which I happened upon this amazing story about a mother who brought her baby back to life by holding him and lovingly caressing him. While telling my husband about it, he mentioned how much he loves it when I take the time to rub his back. He said that nothing in the whole world feels better to him, but that he understands that my work keeps me too busy to do that every day, at which point my heart just about broke. While doing great work is important to me, it’s certainly not more important than loving that man well. We’d all be wise to make time every day to show those we care about how much they mean to us in the ways that most make them feel loved.
