A little while ago, I was talking to a friend who had gotten a great job offer and wasn’t sure if she should accept it or not because she thought there was a good chance that the company would be sold in a few years. She kept saying, I just wish I knew for sure that I would have a job for the next twenty years if I accept. I pointed out that no one in the whole world knows for sure that they will have a job for the next twenty years, even if they think they do today. We have only to look at the recent government shut-down in the U.S. to see that there are no guarantees in life. We think it would be great if there WERE guarantees, but would it really? I think a predictable life would quickly become gray, boring, and deadening to our spirits. I hope you reach for whatever calls to you today – whether it’s new love, an exciting new experience or a promising but risky opportunity – with faith that if things change, you can always reach for some wonderful new thing tomorrow.
