Amazing Story Contest for the Week of October 7, 2013

In 2008, I lost my best friend and cousin, Rene. It took me years to assimilate his loss and let him go. At some point, I noticed that the vivid dreams I used to have of him were starting to fade. I used to frequently dream that he was telling me he was really alive, but over time, those dreams stopped. As time went by, I developed secret, low-key addictions to certain drugs, and I eventually stopped thinking so much about the past.

One night this past summer, as I drove home to Woodland, a town about 15 minutes from Sacramento, I noticed it was almost four a.m. and I had a pile of problems to deal with the next day. I began feeling very depressed about my relationship with my entire family, as they have no intention of ever changing their hurtful, self-centered ways.

For some odd reason, the radio station (101.1 FM), which is usually old school, started playing Scrubs by TLC. After this, Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child came on, and then the trio was finished with Selena’s Dreaming of You.

These were Rene’s top three favorite songs. In fact, we had developed special choreography to each one of them when we were kids. As I pondered how strange it was that all three of his favorite songs had just played on that particular station, I felt a powerful sense of strength flow into me. I felt his spirit with me, telling me not to give up. I felt that he was telling me that there was light at the end of the tunnel, which is a metaphor I had always felt was really cliche – it wasn’t the sort of thought I would have on my own. I suddenly felt overwhelmingly happy, like he was there in my car, telling me to smile and dance with him.

That night was a turning point for me. I have been clean now for three months, and I am trying so hard to not give up and to keep finding the patience to put up with my family. I know it doesn’t sound like a lot to read it, but the joy and invisible strength I felt during this experience changed me. I really believe that his spirit blessed me with the strength to turn my life around that night.
