by Sylvia Edmonds

One warm evening at a pet event, I was stationed to do canine massage therapy next to a rescue organization. It was my first outing as a newly-certified canine therapist and I was nervous.

Chantal, a cute, honey-colored Spitz mix, was one of the dogs in the next booth in need of a new home. This little girl was anxious, exhibiting her fear by growling at any strangers who came close.

As friendly as I am toward dogs, she even growled at me when I approached her booth. After Chantal had growled at several visitors, her companion asked if I thought that a massage might relax her. Knowing that soothing touch can heal hearts as well as bodies, I replied, “Let’s give it a try.”

When her keeper put her on my table, Chantal did NOT growl at that moment. Rather, she turned to look at me with a rather quizzical and suspicious look and stayed seated on her haunches. Very slowly and gently, I placed my hands on her back and began to stroke softly from her head to her tail.

She did not move, but kept her eyes on me. Being unsure of how she might respond, I felt a strong urge to help this little one. Persevering with mindfulness and love, I began to relax. Within a few moments, Chantal sank down onto the table, her head still up, her body stretched out like a sphinx. I continued the massage, moving ever so slowly on to her limbs and head, keeping one hand on her at all times.

Completely focused and feeling connected with this little dog’s heart, I was amazed to see her gradually lay her head down completely and close her eyes. My impression was that she melted like butter. The massage continued for a while longer. When I gently removed my hands, she stayed resting, eyes closed. I can only imagine that this scared little dog had opened her heart because she felt safe, trusting and loved. I was amazed.

The wonder of that massage was that more than two hearts were healed by the shared touch. All it takes is the willingness to risk loving and being loved. That’s magic!
