It was a beautiful autumn day in 2000. The fall colors were in full bloom, and the sun was shining bright. I was driving my 17-month-old daughter Marissa and my sister-in-law Beth to my older daughter’s soccer game. My husband was already at the game. My two girls are 10 years apart but they are very close.
Marissa was sitting in her car seat behind Beth, and we were all excited to watch Jessica play soccer. We were about a mile away from the field and there was a white SUV in front of us. We all came to a stop at the red light. Beth and I were talking. The light turned green, and the car in front of us proceeded through the intersection, but my foot never left the brake.
I could hear the cars behind me tooting their horns. I was looking at the light and I kept thinking, The light is green. The light is green. The light is green, but I couldn’t move. It felt like time was standing still. Beth even said, Elise, the light is green. Go! The people behind you are getting upset.
Nevertheless, I couldn’t take my foot off the brake; I tried but it wouldn’t move. It seemed like many minutes lapsed and everything was moving in slow motion, but in reality it was probably only a few seconds. Those few seconds save my family’s life.
The white SUV in front of us was three-fourths of the way through the intersection when I heard a car racing in from my right; it was traveling at a high rate of speed. The black SUV ran its red light and slammed into the white SUV. The black SUV’s front passenger side hit the rear quarter panel behind the back tire of the white SUV. The impact was so intense that it literally lifted the white SUV off the ground. The white SUV was momentarily balanced on its two left wheels before it came crashing back onto the ground.
If we had continued through the intersection, my little Honda would not have survived that kind of impact, and my daughter and sister-in-law would not be here. I cried as I saw what was happening in front of us. After it was over, I turned to Beth and said, Do you realize my Angels, your Angels, and Marissa’s Angels – all our Angels – just saved our lives?
I was crying and thanking the Angels. I was sobbing. I couldn’t help it. I was so grateful nothing had happened to us.
Instead of going straight to go to the game, I made a right hand turn to move out of the way of the traffic, and pulled over to the side of the road. We were sitting directly across from the black SUV. I waited for the police to come to tell my story since I was a witness to the accident. Would you believe all the other cars behind me just left the scene of the accident? No one else stopped to report what they saw. I guess they didn’t want to get involved.
As we were sitting in the car, waiting for the cops to arrive, a man ran over to us. He told us he was the first car on the other side of the road, sitting at the red light, so he had full view of what was going on. He saw it coming. He asked me why I didn’t proceed through the intersection, especially since all the cars were tooting their horns. I told him, You’re not going to believe this, but I couldn’t take my foot off the brake. I saw the green light, I heard the horns, but I couldn’t move.
He told us that when he saw what was about to happen, he prayed that we wouldn’t go through the intersection.
Meanwhile, my husband at the soccer game was having an uneasy feeling, a feeling of something being wrong. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but it wouldn’t go away. He didn’t know what it was, but he was nervous. When he heard all the sirens in the background, he got really nervous and immediately knew that we were involved so he left the game to go find us. Mind you, wild horses could never get my husband to leave our daughter’s games, but he just knew. When he arrived at the intersection, he saw us parked on the side of the road. He saw the ambulance, the fire trucks and police, and his stomach sank. He parked his car and came running over. I asked him what he was doing there. He told me he had a gut feeling all morning that something was wrong or going to happen, and when he heard the sirens, he had to go make sure it wasn’t us.
The lady in the black SUV tried to say the white SUV ran the red light and that’s why I didn’t proceed through the intersection. The cops asked me the same question. Naturally, I didn’t tell them about the Angels. I told them I heard a car racing in from my right and decided not to go through the intersection, but we did have the green light. Thankfully, the guy on the opposite side of the road who had the red light and saw the whole thing also stayed to tell the truth.
That day we were all connected: family, Angels, and even a stranger. Our Angels spoke to each other and intervened; prayers were answered; my family was saved from a devastating car accident. I am grateful to the Angels to this day.
