My most amazing spiritual experience occurred in the summer of 1998. I had moved abruptly from Toronto, Canada to London, England in May of that year. My move was impulsive and spontaneous; a knee jerk reaction to finding out that my boyfriend of four years had been having an affair.
I had friends in England and planned to stay for six months. Sadly, I struggled from day-one of my arrival. I did not feel comfortable or relaxed, and dipped into bouts of depression. The weather in London that year was dismal: Rain or overcast with a high of 10 degrees; not the hot, sunny summer I was used to in Ontario, Canada.
By week eight of my stay in London, I had enough, admitted defeat and bought a plane ticket to Toronto the following week. My friends in London were sad to see me leave and held an intervention in order to convince me that it would improve and that I would find happiness if I just gave it some more time. I was a little overwhelmed by their show of love and support, and, since I am an overachiever who hates to give up on anything, I agreed to stay.
I plodded along for two more rainy weeks, not entirely unhappy but not happy either. I was, however, determined to see it through and stay the full six months I had originally planned.
At dawn, on that Thursday morning in July, I was lying in my bed, half awake, registering that the sun was shining for the first time in days when a movement caught my eye. I turned my head toward the closed bedroom door and my father was standing inside it, not having opened it. My father passed away in March of 1996 – two years prior – very suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 52, so, naturally, I was shocked to see him. He smiled and said, “Okay, it’s time to go home now, Doll” then turned, opened the door and left. I jumped up and followed him, but he was gone. I searched the entire house and grounds in but there was no sign of him.
When your dead father shows up in person and tells you to ‘go home now’ you do. I called the airline, packed and was boarding a flight to Toronto by noon that same day.
Sitting on the plane, in the brightest sunshine I’d seen during my time in London, flipping through a magazine, I was briefly startled by the thought, “I hope he meant my home and not his home, or this plane is going down!” and laughed. I decided to take my chances because not even the fear of a plane crash could dampen my joy of being on my way home.
The plane did not crash and I have not seen my father since, but I know we are connected and he is with me every day. If ever I need guidance or reassurance I look to the sky and inevitably I will see an airplane or the vapor trail of one that has just gone by.
