Amazing Story Contest for the Week of July 8, 2013

[title size=”2″]The Haunted Church[/title] by Katrina

Back in the year 2000, a friend of mine and I decided to take a road trip to find a ranch that her family owned. It was out in the country, and she was not exactly sure where it was located. We decided to try and find it just for fun, and headed out around nine p.m. We never did find her family’s ranch that night; instead, we got very lost. While driving down a country lane, I saw an unremarkable road off to the right. I felt an urge to turn that way, and we headed down a dark, winding road. As we turned the corner, we saw a bright light on our left. It was coming from an old church. We were in the middle of nowhere, so I felt like I just had to check it out.

We parked, walked through the gate, and started looking around. My friend went off to the left, and I went up to the front doors, which were pad-locked shut. There was not a (living) soul in sight, and no evidence of anyone having been there in ages. As I stood in front of the doors, suddenly I heard what sounded like a three-ring circus going off inside the church! Inside the building, we could hear slamming sounds, banging, crashing, and all sorts of chaos. I knew that this racket was being directed at us; that something or someone was aware that we were there. I called for my friend and we booked it out of there. I had no idea where we were, but I managed to get us back home.

A year or so later, another friend and I decided to look online for known haunted locations in our area. Out of the blue, a picture of an old church popped up, claiming to be one of the most haunted locations in our state. I was instantly reminded of that old church and told my friend the story. I made no assumptions that it was the same one, but it had an address so we decided to go check it out.

Though I had no idea what I was doing, I took along a micro-cassette recorder. As soon as we rounded the corner, my mouth dropped open, for I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was the exact same church I had visited a year before! My friend felt totally spooked and wouldn’t even get out of the car. I walked around the church for a minute, but my friend was scared and wanted to leave, so I told her we could go to the next town about eight miles away and grab a disposable camera. In the mean time, I would set the recorder against the doors of the church. Then we could come back, take some pictures, grab the cassette recorder and leave.

When we got back, the brand new disposable camera never got off a shot for it was instantly drained of power. I grabbed the cassette recorder, rolled up the windows, and headed out. Later, when we listened to the cassette, what we heard would have given many people nightmares, though I was ecstatic! On the recording, you could clearly hear banging sounds, metallic noises, and even voices! Mind you, there was not a single living soul anywhere near that church when all of this happened.

The next day, I called my brother who lives in a different town to tell him all about it. My sister-in-law answered, and when I finished telling her my story, she said, You know, this kind of sounds familiar. Do you mind if I call you right back? When she called me back ten minutes later, she told me to grab the recorder and head to her house. She lived about 45 minutes away on ten acres. There are about eight mobile homes on the property that they rent out. The moment I got there changed the rest of my life. Sitting in my sister’s house was a woman that rented the mobile home closest to the house who had quite a story to tell about that old church!

As it turns out, the church was on the land of a freed slaves colony. The colony had a few descendants of the original settlers still living on those 2000 acres. This woman was the very recent ex-wife of the preacher of the church, and also one of those last remaining descendants of the slave colony. The picture online that brought me back to the church was her picture. It seems that she had become heavily involved in exploring the paranormal because of her experiences at that church and the surrounding property. She had all sorts of amazing experiences there, and has a whole box full of EVPs that she recorded.

She ended up becoming my mentor in exploring the paranormal. I joined a paranormal investigation group, and a few months later, I was asked to take over. Since then, I have been written about in books and magazine articles, spoken at seminars, been on TV, and had all sorts of wonderful experiences, all because of a little church out in the middle of nowhere!
