I got divorced eleven years ago. It was a very turbulent time; my long-time career had ended, and shortly thereafter, my marriage fell apart. I felt completely lost.
One day I was in the shower crying when something happened that had never happened before. I heard this loud male voice say, Psalm 23.
It startled me and I didn’t know if it was real or I had just heard it in my head, but it was enough to make me stop crying.
After I got out of the shower and dried off, I immediately went to my Bible to look up Psalm 23. (My family wasn’t religious, and I didn’t go to church often, so I didn’t know any biblical passages by name.) It turned out that it was one of my favorite passages.
Psalm 23:
The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.
