Advice: Connect with Departed Loved Ones in Dreams

throughfogDear Kajama:
In a recent email reply to me, you stated that there are many things that I can do to both remember my dreams and to consciously manifest the dream experiences I desire. (I very much want to connect with a departed loved one via my dreams, but I doubt that I dream at all since I can never remember my dreams.) Can you please elaborate and help me understand how I can work with my dreams so that I can be successful in connecting with my beloved angel Sam? I desperately want to dream of him so that I can be with him one more time. Thanks for all of your help.
Del

Dear Del:

There is a definite correlation between our ability to remember and work with our dreams and our ability to manifest other psychic experiences like connecting with departed loved ones. In fact, a great way to begin to develop psychically is by working with your dreams. Since you also want to visit with a loved one in your dreams, then learning how to work with your dreams in a general way is where we should start.

While many people believe that they don’t dream because they can’t remember dreaming, everyone does dream. What you need to do is build a stronger bridge between your conscious mind and your subconscious mind, for this is at the heart of remembering and working with your dreams and also psychic feats like tuning in to your intuition and learning how to connect with spirits.

I will give you my number one most powerful tip for remembering your dreams in detail first: allow yourself to wake up and fall asleep many times every morning. If you allow yourself to linger in that hazy state of mind somewhere between being asleep and dreaming and being wide awake, you will begin to remember all sorts of dreams. If you can’t sleep in because you must be somewhere at a certain time, then set your alarm for 90 minutes before you have to get up and hit the snooze button over and over. This one practice alone should get things really rolling for you, but here are some other tips for remembering your dreams:

  • Don’t drink alcohol before bed.
  • Record your dreams by writing down everything you can remember of them and their overall feeling as soon as you wake up. If you wake up at 2 a.m. remembering a dream, jot down a couple of key words to help you remember it in the morning. When you wake up in the morning, review those scribbles and write down the rest. If you can’t remember dreaming in the morning, then write down your mood when you awaken and anything else that comes to mind. Try stream of consciousness journaling.
  • Most of us only remember the last dream we had, so to remember more dreams, you can also try programming yourself to wake up periodically throughout the night. As the average sleep cycle is around 90 minutes, you might set an alarm to wake you up every hour and a half or so, at least during the second half of the night when your need for deep sleep has been met and you’ll be spending more time in REM.
  • When you awaken in the morning, don’t open your eyes or change position. Being in the same position you were in when you were dreaming aids dream recall.
  • Read about dreams, especially at night before you’re going to sleep. I highly recommend books by my favorite author on dreams, Robert Moss. He also teaches wonderful workshops around the world.
  • Tell the Universe what you want, and work with the law of attraction to manifest it.

There are of course some very powerful ways to both build that bridge between your subconscious and conscious minds and to foster your aim of connecting with a loved one in Spirit. One is regular meditation, and the other is learning how to astral travel. There are vast and wonderful books written on both of these subjects, so I won’t go into details here. I do, however, want to recommend the books of Bruce Moen, who travels into the dimension of the afterlife to connect with departed loved ones and help lost spirits. You can learn how to astral travel and find the one you’re looking for yourself.

I was pondering this column as I was falling asleep last night, and I realized that I hadn’t been visited in my dreams by my father in some months now. I then awoke around 2 a.m. and realized I had just had a wonderful dream. In the dream, I was invited/allowed to ride this special train with my father. I couldn’t really see him, but I could feel him all around me. There was music playing throughout the train, and it was the music of my beautiful memories of him. I rode this train for a long time, much of that time, crying tears of love and joy as I listened to the music of those beautiful memories. I remember knowing that I was allowed to ride this train for as long as I desired, so I rode and rode that train, listening and crying and reliving those memories. When I awoke, I had this deeply satisfied feeling, like my desire for more time with my Dad had at last been satisfied. I also repeated to myself, Dad, train, music every time I awoke throughout the night so I would be sure to remember this important dream in the morning.

Finally, I’m working on a system to teach people both how to connect with their loved ones in dreams and in a trance state. Given that I’m quite a perfectionist, it’s proving to be quite a challenge. Stay tuned; I will get it done one day!

Advice: When Spirit Faces Appear Over the Faces of the Living

spiritfaceDear Kajama:

I recently went to see a medium and had the most amazing experience. She answered all my questions about my job, love life, etc., and she seemed spot on. Then she said that a spirit was coming through. She closed her eyes and while she was concentrating within, her face changed. I saw the face of another woman superimposed over her own! It was not someone I recognized. In fact, it was hard to make out because of the medium’s face showing through a bit. Then her face changed again! Several faces came and went, and finally I saw a face very much like my grandmother’s, and then the medium opened her eyes and brought through my grandmother from Spirit. I was just astounded. I left there so atwitter that I never asked the medium what had just happened, so I’m asking you. What in the world was this?
Elaine

Dear Elaine:

My goodness, how exciting! You’ve found a medium capable of physical mediumship, in this day and age! After reading your question, I was left wondering if the medium knew what you had perceived. It’s possible that this doesn’t happen often, and that she was unaware of what you were seeing.

What you witnessed is called transfiguration; it’s a form of mediumship in which the medium temporarily takes on the appearance of the communicating spirit. Usually this happens only in the face, but the whole body can also be transformed. Please note that when I write transformed, I don’t mean that it literally appears that a different person is sitting before you; I mean that the face of another entity is superimposed over the face of the medium. I believe this sort of experience is more common than most folks might think, for one of the strangest experiences of my life involved something like what you describe, and I’m still not sure what to make of it.

Many years ago when I was a college student, I had a close friend named Charlie. Charlie was very Catholic, but otherwise, we were kindred spirits. We often discussed and debated spiritual matters, with me ever trying to pry open doors of possibility, and Charlie trying to close them. One night we had something of an argument. I don’t even recall what it was about now, but it seemed for a few hours that our friendship was ending. We wound up sitting across from each other in a fairly empty room with our backs against opposing walls, just staring silently at each other. It was very late at night and we were both tired. The only light came from an adjoining room, so it was fairly dim.

As I sat just gazing at him, I began to see his aura. This was nothing new to me, so I relaxed into the delicious dreamy state of seeing auras, when suddenly his face began to change. It was like a holographic face appeared on top of his; it was similar to his, yet different. At the same time I was seeing this, I could see Charlie’s real face beneath this image, and his expression was one of astonishment, as though he was experiencing something strange as well. In quick succession, different faces took form on top of his. It began with the face of an old woman, and then there were a few others, and then the face of what looked to me to be an imposing Spanish conquistador, and then finally a hippie with long hair, a beard, and gentle eyes.

We snapped out of it simultaneously and both started speaking at once. I stopped and let him go first. He said something like, Oh my God, you won’t believe what just happened. Your face just changed. First you were this craggy old woman, then you were [this and that] and then you became the Devil, and then you were Jesus Christ!

I was speechless for a moment, for it hit me that we had seen exactly the same thing: I had seen him become an old woman, and a Spanish conquistador (a man with a pointy beard who could easily be interpreted to be the devil if one was predisposed to interpreting this image this way), and a gentle bearded hippie (Jesus Christ). Our fight was immediately forgotten, and we were totally freaked out. At the time, we decided that we may have seen each other as we had been in past lives. (For the record, I am NOT suggesting that we assumed we had been the devil or Jesus, but that we had been people who resembled those figures.) I now no longer believe that to be true. After all, the images we saw were identical, so unless we were one person in those past lives, it doesn’t make sense. I now believe we were seeing spirits as they used our etheric energy to manifest visual images, either of themselves or of others, such as Jesus.

This was early on in my psychic life, and I had no frame of reference for this experience. It was later that I learned about transfiguration and other forms of physical mediumship, and this new knowledge validated that experience, for neither of us had ever heard of such a thing before. Apparently it is normal for many faces to appear in succession when a medium is allowing transfiguration to take place. I don’t know who the spirits were, or why we saw images of the devil and Jesus Christ. (I certainly didn’t get the feeling that the image I saw that resembled the so-called devil was actually anything other than a man with a pointy beard.) It feels to me like this experience was, however, related to all of our religious debates, which were really at the center of our relationship. Perhaps it was just a gift to keep our friendship intact, given that we were fighting when it occurred.

Transfiguration is much like mirror-gazing, wherein the faces of spirits can appear over your own as you gaze into a mirror. This practice was invented by the ancient Greeks, and has been explored by lots of spiritual folk throughout the ages. It is even currently being employed by modern healers as an effective tool in grief counseling.

To try mirror gazing for yourself:

  • First, ask for help from Spirit. Don’t leave the doorway open to just any spirit passing by. Set a clear conscious intention of connecting with spirits of love and light, or with a certain loved one in Spirit or your guides. (Guides tend to be more adept at such manifestations than your average afterlife dweller.)
  • Sit in front of a mirror in a darkened room. The best lighting is a candle or two that is placed behind you or off to the side.
  • Start by gazing into your own eyes. Your eyes will quickly begin to grow bleary, and your gaze will naturally soften. This is good. Don’t bring things back into focus, even though it may be hard to resist trying. Just stare at yourself with a soft gaze. The key is to be in a very relaxed, receptive state of mind.
  • Now you want to just watch what happens. You will likely begin to see changes taking place, and these changes will turn into faces. Try to just relax and OBSERVE. If any faces make you uncomfortable, call upon your guides and angels to help you bring through only pleasant images.

Like my experience with my friend Charlie, you can also try this with a friend. What’s really interesting is when you get at least three people together, for I’ve participated in such experiments, and it’s extra validating when more than one person sees the same thing.

While it’s fine to undertake such experiments out of curiosity, pursuing them with a sincere desire to connect with and understand the Divine nature of existence tends to yield a higher level of experience. (If you’re irreverent about it, your experience will match your vibration!) Grief counselors have noted remarkable results when such experiences are induced by or with the grieving. As they reconnect with their missing loved one, all their sorrow and pain seems to just spontaneously heal. For more information, I recommend you begin by exploring the books and research of Raymond Moody, who has made a new science of mirror gazing. There is also a great book on this phenomenon by Mark Macy entitled Spirit Faces: Truth About the Afterlife.

If you’re longing to be visited by someone in Spirit, you don’t have to wait around, hoping and wishing. Just as spirits can reach out to the living, we can reach out to spirits. Give it a try!

May exciting new doorways of possibility continue to open to you!

Advice: Learning to Communicate with Spirits

spiritcontactDear Kajama:

I’ve been following your column for more than a decade now, and have used your advice to begin to develop my own psychic abilities. I’ve learned how to work with a pendulum, how to read tarot, and a bit about astrology. I sincerely believe in an afterlife and that it’s possible to communicate with spirits, but for some reason, this experience eludes me. I’ve had lots of other amazing psychic and spiritual experiences, but I’ve not been able to achieve spirit communication. Do you believe that some people are prevented from communicating with the spirit world for some reason? What should I do to move forward toward my goal?
Lindsay

Dear Lyndsay:

While this is a huge topic worthy of volumes of books and years of training, I’ll do my best to steer you in the right direction. I think the first thing to keep in mind is that what you’re experiencing is very common, for I know many very gifted psychics who can’t communicate with spirits at all. There are various reasons why this tends to be true. For one thing, most people have mixed feelings about the whole idea of interacting with spirits; even if they are keen on making it happen, there is often a part of them that remains uncomfortable or frightened by the whole idea, and this fear can prevent them from moving forward. Fear of failure can also cause blocks: When I was in training to become a Spiritualist minister, most of my classmates were so intimidated by the idea of trying to bring through evidential information that they couldn’t bring themselves to really go for it. It’s a huge responsibility to try to bring through detailed, evidential messages for people who are grieving, for if we fail, we can do more emotional harm than good.

One of the worst things you can do here is feel bad about yourself or to assume that you’re inadequate somehow. Spirit communication is a rare and very special ability. While the great majority of psychics are not mediums, all the mediums I know are psychic. (Think about how rare it is to be extraordinarily psychic; it’s much rarer to be a gifted medium.) Also, most of the mediums I know did not develop their ability to communicate with spirits purposefully; it just sort of happened to them. What they had to work on was how to control it after it spontaneously erupted in their lives. While the ability to perceive spirits tends to happen spontaneously, there are things you can do to cultivate that ability.

I recommend that anyone who wishes to develop their spirit communication abilities find a local Spiritualist church. If you Google “spiritualist” and your hometown or general area, you should find some good options to explore. As the main goal of Spiritualism is to bring through evidence of the afterlife, Spiritualists are the world’s spirit communication experts. Once you connect with a minister at a Spiritualist church, ask if they have a development circle you might be able to join. The church should have an ongoing circle, but if they don’t, the minister should be able to give you some other good options to explore.

There are many benefits of joining a development circle. The most obvious is that you’ll be led through the process of opening to spirit communication by someone who has already walked that path before you and knows it well. This will make the development process safer and easier for you, and also bless you with the support of fellow seekers and resources you can turn to when questions or problems come up. While you’re in the process of developing your abilities, the minister at the church can also help you by bringing through guidance from Spirit for you on what would be most helpful for you at that time.

Just being around other seekers who are working on developing their spirit communication abilities will fuel your own journey with the power of synergy. Basically, you’ll all make faster, greater progress together than you could alone as you all benefit from each other’s energies and experiences. It’s also helpful to have a regular meeting like a development circle or class, for it will keep you on track and continuing to move forward. A Spiritualist church is also a great place to meet kindred spirits and make new spiritual friends.

Development circles are also magnets for spirits who want to communicate with this plane. Spirit has shown me that those who are able to serve as mediums between the living and the so-called dead appear in the spirit world like lights; this is how spirits find them. If a lone medium is like a candle flame, then a group of people united in their efforts to serve as mediums would appear like a bonfire in the spirit world; the more people are gathered together with the shared aim of spirit communication, the more spirits are likely to be drawn in. This is important, for unlike psychic reading work, spirit communication is a cooperative endeavor. While psychics can tune in and retrieve information much like we might search Google for answers, mediumship is a two-way street that requires communication from both sides.

I hope all of this convinces you to at least give the idea of finding a Spiritualist church a try. Expect to attend a development circle weekly, and to spend years mastering this ability.

In order to promote success with spirit communication, you will need to move beyond the tools. Tarot, astrology, and pendulums can be great, but they won’t help you much with spirit communication. For that, you’ll need to be able to directly receive psychic impressions from Spirit: you’ll want to be able see, hear and feel what Spirit is trying to tell you without the need for these tools. There are many resources out there to help you develop your psychic abilities. We have some great tools in the Spiritual Toolbox at Kajama. I’m also currently in the process of developing a sophisticated process for psychic development that will include spirit communication, which I hope to have available in the spring of 2014.

I always recommend developing a strong relationship with a spirit guide before trying to communicate with other spirits. This will protect you from undesirable experiences and empower you to seek and receive guidance as you move forward. Your guide will be able to help you should you find it difficult to communicate with a particular spirit. (Some spirits are much more adept at this communication than others, just as some people are much more adept at communicating their thoughts and feelings than others.) When I am communicating with a spirit and struggling to understand what they’re trying to convey, I know I can always ask my guide for clarification. Establishing a strong relationship with a guide will prove immeasurably helpful whenever you are engaged in spirit communication. You might begin this process with Meet Your Spirit Guide. You should spend at least some time every day in communication with your guide/s, both about your own life and concerns and about your development process.

There are also some good schools throughout the country. The school I attended and recommend is in Lily Dale, which is an enchanting spiritual community in western New York state. It’s called the School of Spiritual Healing and Prophecy, and its curriculum is designed so that folks can attend from all over the country. Here’s a link to the school’s website, Fellowships of the Spirit.

I pray that this guidance will empower you to begin to move forward, and that your journey will be blessed with moving encounters with loving spirits.
