Basic Grounding Exercise

For this exercise, it is best to sit in a chair with your back straight and your feet firmly on the ground. You have chakras under your feet, so see them opening up before you do this exercise, and close them lightly afterwards.

1. Start to relax by taking slow deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth until you feel your muscles relaxing.

2. Imagine that your tailbone at the bottom of your spine becomes like a root of a tree that spreads deep down into the Earth’s Core. (This is your Grounding Cord).

3. See this cord extending from your spine down to the center of the Earth. I also visualise roots coming out of the soles of my feet that also travel down into the Earth’s center.

4. Relax and take a deep breath and hold this position for a few moments.

5. [Imagine all the negative energy you’ve collected as you’ve walked through life gathered at your solar plexus, and send that negative energy] down through these roots to be transmuted by Mother Earth.

6. Finally see fresh, invigorating Earth Energy returning to your body through the Grounding Cord and your roots up through your base chakra and then to the rest of your chakras and body. Visualise the roots again and see them fastened to an imaginary magnet at the centre of the earth. You are now grounded.

7. After I have grounded, I visualise the grounding energies moving up through my chakras from the root chakra and out through my crown chakra high up into the sky. I then see my grounding energy mixing with sparkling white spiritual energy and I bring the two energies back down through my chakras starting at the crown chakra through to the base and then around the rest of my body. This exercise adds balance to the body as you are now holding both grounding and spiritual energies in equal measure.

Grounding

Grounding gives us a strong connection with Mother Earth and makes us feel safe and secure. As Empaths, we are extremely intuitive and we spend much of our time in the world of spirit quite naturally. Some would say that our heads are always in the clouds, and if we are truthful, this is where we feel most comfortable. As we spend so much time in the higher realms, our higher chakras open quite naturally; we do literally have one foot in heaven and the other on Earth. However, we are spiritual beings having a human experience and as such we need to have an energetic connection from the physical body into the centre of the earth.

Staying grounded is something that I used to find extremely difficult as an Empath, and still do to a certain extent; I still have to work at it every day. Whilst writing my book, I had to stop intermittently to do things like housework or exercise to bring myself back to planet Earth. I found myself getting so engrossed in the subject matter that I was too much in my head and was drawing in too much spiritual energy. To clear it, I had to do something physical.

Grounding is imperative because when the aura has a solid connection with Mother Earth, we feel calmer and more confident; our intuition is clearer; and our self-esteem is better. Grounding also brings us into balance and allows the energy to flow freely around our bodies, which in turn strengthens our aura.

Have you ever noticed that you can have days when every light switch you touch blows the light bulb? This is a sure indication that you are ungrounded because the physical body is quite electrical and needs grounding to function properly. I also know when I am not grounded because I start to feel anxious and I experience feelings of dizziness and sickness or I become very light-headed. Cold feet, suffering from repeated colds, heart palpitations, weight gain, forgetfulness or receiving static shocks can also be indicators that we are not grounded properly.

As Empaths, we are constantly absorbing the energy around us, and grounding is a way of removing the excessive energy and toxicity from our spiritual and physical bodies. When we ground, we are releasing stress and unwanted energy into Mother Earth (the ultimate Empath), where it is transmuted. During the grounding process, we release the toxic energy and then we draw back up the healing and cleansing Earth Energy.

There are lots of reasons why we can lose our connection with Earth, but things like shock, exhaustion, fear, guilt, and traumatic life events can cause us to lose our grounding. If you are finding the grounding process very difficult, don’t worry: just continue with the visualisation exercise and repeat it several times a day if necessary.

I bought myself a very heavy Hematite bracelet, as this stone is excellent for grounding and protection, but I found that I could only wear it for short periods of time initially because it made me feel quite strange. I realise now that my body was just getting used to feeling grounded, as this was such an unusual state for me to be in. I wore the bracelet for short periods of time to start with, and built up on this as my body adjusted to its new state. Now I can wear the bracelet all the time as I have gotten used to the grounded state. I am just pointing this out as you may have a similar reaction to the process, but it is nothing to worry about. If you really cannot tolerate the black stones like Onyx and Hematite, try a red stone bracelet like Red Jasper, as the energy is a little softer and may be more suitable for you.

I strongly suggest that Empaths should use several grounding techniques at the same time. I personally use exercise, crystals and visualisations in combination every day to help me stay grounded. Other things that can help include gardening, walks in nature, eating chocolate, yoga, meditation, using Rescue Remedy and drinking lots of water. It is also suggested that eating a large meal containing protein is very grounding. To ground myself instantly, I find it really beneficial to either stamp my feet a few times, do a few star jumps, or walk barefoot around the garden.

Dealing with Non-Empathic People

From a spiritual perspective, I do believe that we are all here on this path called “life” to evolve as souls. I believe in reincarnation in that after we die, our souls are born again into another body. I believe that we return to Earth many times to learn valuable lessons in order to perfect our souls so that we eventually return to Divinity/God/the Creator. We are all working through the levels of consciousness with each incarnation we have here on Earth to learn and grow.

What do I mean by the levels of consciousness? Well this concept is a little difficult to define, but from a very basic premise, as we progress, we move our consciousness to higher levels by evolving into kinder, more sensitive, more loving people. We have to learn to treat other people respectfully even as we go through our spiritual lessons/tests here on the Earth Plane. In a nutshell, you could say that it is about learning what is right from wrong. The ultimate aim is to become fully conscious, to learn all our lessons so that we can ascend so that we never have to return here.

As Empaths, it is very difficult for us with our sensitive natures to witness some of the cruel things that go on in the world, and we can be deeply affected by the problems we see on the news. We can also struggle with the way we are treated by other people who are not so sensitive, and we also have a strong sense of fairness about what is right and what is wrong. I feel this is because we are old souls. We have worked through many levels of consciousness during many different incarnations, and we look at things differently as a result. I am not suggesting that as Empaths we are Angels by any means; we too can have our moments (particularly if we are holding a lot of toxic energy), as we are still growing and evolving along with everyone else. It is just that our souls are a little further along the evolution process than a lot of other people’s.

I have found it very useful to look at situations in terms of the levels of consciousness because it has helped me to understand why some people behave in the way that they do. As a sensitive person, I struggled to see how some individuals could be so selfish and mean to others without any remorse or guilt. I have witnessed this within my own family as well as in the workplace and in the wider community. In some ways, I feel I used to alienate myself because I was quite judgemental of the behaviour I was witnessing. I now realise that we are all on a path, and that some people are just at a different level of consciousness to me and they are just not aware of how their actions are affecting other people. They are totally oblivious! They have the thick skin that as Empaths we just do not possess. They are very much in the third dimension, and there should not be any judgement – things are and will change as more souls begin to wake up.

That being said, as Empaths we still have to live on the Earth Plane with our high sensitivity, and I don’t want to make light of that because at times it can be very, very hard. So what can we do to make life a little easier for ourselves when dealing with non-empathic people who do not understand our trait and quite frankly don’t want to? We are after all living in a culture that dismisses sensitivity and honours the intellect.

I would like to suggest the following ideas to help you:

As much as you possibly can, learn to DETACH. (I understand that this is difficult for us because of our oneness with everything.) Don’t give things your energy; walk away if you can! If someone presses your buttons and makes you very angry, your energy expands and the space that opens up from this could quite easily attract more negativity.

Learn to DISCERN. Whilst I always think that it is best to detach from a situation if you can, there will be times when you do have to take action. If we do not intervene in some scenarios, there will never be any evolution; things will never change if a person or an organisation thinks that they can continually get away with something. Sometimes we have to speak up. In the case of bullies, you will often find that once you have made that stand, they will back down and leave you alone.

Look at the situation in terms of the levels of consciousness and realise that people who are rude, critical, arrogant and self-centered are usually very insecure. In these situations, lead by example – demonstrate what it means to live in a higher vibration.

Make sure that both your energetic boundaries and your personal boundaries are intact. Don’t let these people make you feel bad about who you are; accept and feel strong within your empathic trait and be true to who you are.

Drop these people from your life if at all possible. Spend less time with these harmful people if possible and don’t engage in their negativity. As Empaths, we often pick up that very negative people are often just feeling lonely and unloved and they are taking it out on everyone else, but that does not mean we have to save them or feel sorry for them at the expense of our own self-esteem or feelings. Abuse is one way that people subconsciously try to get rid of their negative energy and then steal the victim’s positive energy. Stay away!
