Double Vision: EVP Work Leads to Negative Experiences

evpDear Double Vision:
Five years ago, my gift changed from seeing spirit to hearing spirit. At that time in my life, I was feeling pretty low. I did EVP work without protecting myself because at that time, I didn’t know it was important. Because I was feeling so low, I attracted low level spirits. Now, five years later, I am still struggling with all of this. I believe I have two spirits attached to me, one male and one female, and they take pleasure in making it difficult for me to sleep and go about my day. They scream nasty things and lie about everything and won’t shut up or go away. I have tried everything to get rid of them over the past five years but nothing works. They say horrible things; I want to block them out and to tune in to good spirits and guides. When I do EVP work now, all I hear is terrible voices. This has all been horrible. I really hope you can help me.

Electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) is a practice that can make a person highly vulnerable to spirit attachments. It appears that you have been trying to rid yourself of these entities on your own, without outside help. One of the most important aspects of spiritual work besides protecting yourself is working with others to resolve any issues that might arise as you explore new realms of experience.

Because you have been having a horrible time with all of this, you are now emotionally involved in the situation. This can limit your ability to rid yourself of these spirits. Negative entities thrive on fear, so each time you approach them without spiritual strength or backing, their presence becomes stronger.

I don’t know what you have tried to chase these spirits out, but I will assume they are the usual methods of sage smudging or house cleansing. In your situation, however, these entities are directly attached to you and not your environment, so you will need to perform a personal cleansing and ask for outside help to resolve the problem. I recommend that you contact a psychic who specializes in spirit removal.

A few hours prior to the psychic’s arrival, perform this ritual to repel the negative spirits and seal up any holes in your aura that are allowing them to attach to you. Fill a sauce pan with four cups of purified water and a handful of whole cloves. Bring the mixture to a boil and let it simmer for one hour. After 30 minutes, add one cup of water to maintain the liquid level. Your home will fill with the scent of cloves, which is distasteful to negative spirits. After an hour, strain the mixture to remove the cloves, reserving the liquid. Start a bath and pour the liquid into the water. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes. Every five minutes, immerse yourself fully (a total of three times) for three-second intervals. This will repair and seal your aura and promote spiritual power.

When the psychic arrives, point out where most of the activity with these entities occurs. Once the psychic has completed the spirit clearing, you can create a protective boundary with salt. Sprinkle a fine line of salt around the outside of your home or, if you live in an apartment, place four to six small packets of salt (the kind you get at a fast-food restaurant) in the corner of each room. Perform this ritual (or replace the salt packets) once a month. Finally, continue to call in and work with positive spirits. Like an army of protectors, the more benevolent entities you can invite into your world, the less likely negative spirits are to cross your boundaries again.

I’m sorry for your struggles, and am glad you wrote to us. You were feeling low when this trouble began, which may indicate your brain chemistry was off-balance at the time. We are all vulnerable to depression if we neglect ourselves, so when it comes to doing good in the world, there are some adages to remember, such as Put your own oxygen mask on first and Don’t let the pilot light go out. If you don’t take loving care of and preserve yourself, you won’t be able to help others.

In regards to protecting yourself, you wrote, I didn’t know it was important. I suspect that applies to setting boundaries in all areas of your life and not just your EVP work. You are likely a sensitive person who can empathically sense the suffering of others. Highly sensitive people often come to think of life as unbearable because not only do they experience their own dose of pain and suffering, they are capable of experiencing the pain and suffering of others as well.

Whether you actually have low-level male and female spirits attached to you or are hearing echoes of your own critical mom and dad, or are experiencing auditory hallucinations as a result of exhaustion or mental illness, you must make self-care your priority now. You are vulnerable to these abusive voices, and in a downward spiral. You must halt your decline by confronting your emotional, mental, spiritual and perhaps physical exhaustion.

A good night’s sleep is critical to our well-being during the day. Please investigate holistic sleep remedies or speak to your doctor about a temporary sedative so that you can catch up on your rest. Eat well, take time to relax and play, exercise and pamper yourself. You might consult with a psychiatrist to see if medication would help quiet the voices. As you continue to soothe and care for yourself, you will come to believe you have inherent worth. Your new belief will be reflected by new outer circumstances. For the most part, spirits and people can’t do to us what we aren’t already doing to ourselves on some level.

I chose a tarot card for you, and the Tower turned up. The Tower represents the shaking up and falling away of all that no longer suits you. The Tower is a call to courage, as it’s not easy to allow things to fall away when they’ve been familiar for so long. When we take this leap of faith, we free ourselves to move on to the next card in the sequence, the Star, which represents the brilliant radiance of our true essence. It may be appropriate to take a break from EVP for now, and evaluate later whether to continue the work or explore a new path of service.
